From Bamboo to Dignity: How Kolhariya Village Built Its Own Change

In the quiet lanes of Kolhariya village, a remarkable transformation has taken root not through external construction, but through the strength, skill, and spirit of the community itself. What began as a simple idea has grown into a powerful example of self-reliance and collective action.

With the support of Ambedkar Foundation and in partnership with Goonj under the Cloth for Work (CFW) initiative, the villagers of Kolhariya came together to address a local need: creating functional and durable seating spaces within their village. Instead of waiting for outside help, they chose to build their own solution using a resource they had in abundance bamboo.

Men and women of the village actively participated in crafting sturdy bamboo benches, transforming raw materials into meaningful infrastructure. These benches are now placed in common areas, serving as gathering spots for discussions, rest, and community bonding. More than just physical structures, they represent ownership, dignity, and the power of working together.

Under the CFW model, the effort and time contributed by the villagers were recognized through the distribution of essential kits provided by Goonj. These kits, containing useful household materials, were not charity but a dignified exchange for the work completed by the community. This approach reinforces the idea that development should be participatory, respectful, and empowering.

This intervention has not only improved the village infrastructure but has also strengthened community cohesion. It has encouraged villagers to take initiative, identify their own challenges, and work collaboratively toward solutions. The bamboo benches stand today as symbols of resilience and self-driven development.

Kolhariya village reminds us that real change does not always require large investments or complex systems. Sometimes, it begins with local resources, collective will, and the right support system. Through partnerships like these, villages can transform into spaces of dignity, sustainability, and shared progress.
